Pisa, famous for its leaning tower, is very important both from a historical and artistic point of view. Thanks to its monuments and its work of arts, Pisa is also one of the most visited cities in the world. Originally Pisa was an Etruscan city. The discovery of ten Roman ships in San Rossore proved that the city later became a Roman colony.

During the Middle Ages Pisa was one of the four Italian Maritime Republics together with Amalfi, Genoa and Venice.
