The Etruscan necropolis of Populonia stretches along the beautiful Gulf of Baratti, which is known for its wonderful sea and beach. Once, this town was buried under heaps of slag from the ancient melting furnaces. One the beach you can still find the so-called “rosticci”, which are residuals of iron from the melting process of the Etruscan and Roman periods. Populonia is the only town built near the sea by the Etruscans, founded to ease the transformation process of the iron coming from Elba island. The area is dominated by the medieval Fortress and by its walls, built in the first half of the 15th century to protect the town against pirate incursions.

In addition to the wonderful view that can be admired from the Fortress top, Populonia also offers Etruscan archaeological ruins, spread all over the territory. The Etruscan Museum, located in the main street, was created to house the numerous finds which were recovered during excavations, which are still in process.
