According to the legend, Siena was founded by Senio, son of Remus, one of the founders of Rome.
The origin of the name of the Siena, without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and in the world, has yet to be found. Some researchers believe it comes from the Etruscan family called Saina, some others believe it derives from the Roman family called Saenii.
It is however sure that its growth took place in the Middle Ages, when the town expanded towards three different points known as the “Terziari” (tertiaries): the town historic centre, San Martino and Camollia.
Ghibelline town, Siena fought cruel epic battles against the Florentine Guelphs, which marked the history of Italy during the Middle Ages. One of the most known battles took place in Montaperti on 4th September 1260, when the Sienese defeated the Florentines. The town reached its maximum splendour in the 14th century, when most of the civil monuments were built and when the city Cathedral started to be built.
In 1348, on the contrary, Siena was defeated by the plague, which caused the death of 3/5 of the population. After a dark period and the alternation of different dominations, in 1559 Siena became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, losing its independence for good. The surrounding areas are also worthwhile visiting. You can enjoy the natural beauty of the Tuscan countryside combined with the beauty of perfectly preserved Medieval towns such as San Gimignano.
